How to know if you have wax build-up in your ears

Ear wax is a natural substance produced by glands in your ear canal. It helps protect your ears by trapping dust, debris, and microorganisms, and also keeps the skin in your ears from becoming dry and itchy. However when there is a build-up of wax, this can be a problem. These are some of the signs that you might need ear wax removal:

  • If you are experiencing reduced hearing
  • If you are experiencing a feeling of fullness or blockage in the ear
  • If you are hearing ringing in your ears (tinnitus)
  • If you are experiencing dizziness
  • if there is any ear pain or discomfort

If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, we believe it would be best to book a consultation with our clinicians.

Irrigation Ear Cleaning

Ear irrigation involves lukewarm water being squirted into the ear canal which dislodges the wax buildup which then falls out with the water.

Ear Health Examination

This comprises of a physical inspection of the ears with an otoscope to look for wax, any signs of infections, or other problems.

FAQs

Ear wax, or cerumen, is a natural substance produced by glands in your ear canal. It helps protect your ears by trapping dust, debris, and microorganisms, and also keeps the skin in your ears from becoming dry and itchy.

Signs that you might need ear wax removal include:
•Reduced hearing
•A feeling of fullness or blockage in the ear
•Ringing (tinnitus)
•Dizziness
•Ear pain or discomfort

If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, it’s best to book a professional consultation.

It’s generally not recommended. Using cotton buds, hairpins, or other objects can push wax deeper into the ear or damage the ear canal or eardrum. Professional ear wax removal is safer and more effective.

We offer safe, clinical methods including:
•Microsuction – a gentle vacuuming technique
•Irrigation – warm water used to flush out wax
•Manual removal – using specialist tools under a microscope

Your practitioner will assess and choose the most appropriate method for you.

Appointments typically last between 20–30 minutes.

We recommend using olive oil or a softening spray for 2–3 days before your appointment to help loosen the wax. We’ll provide clear instructions when you book.

It varies by individual. Some people need regular cleaning every 6–12 months, while others may rarely require it. If you’re unsure, we can advise after an examination.
